Helsinki Biennial

Helsinki Biennial is an international art event that brings outstanding contemporary art to maritime Helsinki. HAM Helsinki Art Museum is responsible for producing and curating the biennial. The first Helsinki Biennial was organized in 2021 and the exhibition presented 41 artists or collectives from Finland and around the world.

Sun Effects designed and implemented the lighting for several artworks at the exhibition, both in indoor and outdoor spaces. We were also responsible for the project management of the production and in charge of the logistics in collaboration with Helsinki Art Museum, Metsähallitus and other designers.

Helsinki Biennial was organized in Vallisaari island that is layered in cultural history and has returned to nature, in a way that respects its nature and buildings. Visitors could spot artworks in Vallisaari along a marked trail both outdoors and inside historical buildings, gunpowder cellars, and empty residential buildings.

The lighting design was done in close collaboration with the curators, artists and other technical staff professionals. The unconventional and challenging setting of the Biennial required custom made lighting solutions with modern equipment. The varying content and form of the artworks also required versatile technical applications and innovative lighting methods.
